Standard Bearings

Kilian Standard Bearings

Kilian produces several lines of standard bearings that are manufactured in high volumes for maximum cost effectiveness. These catalog items are available from Torrington Authorized Distributors throughout North America.

Cage-Type Ball BearingsCage-Type Ball Bearings
Nylon finger-style cages are available in many sizes. The caged design provides better ball guidance, allowing higher speed capabilities (up to 2,000 rpm). By separating the balls, the cage also provides a quieter bearing. This design can hold more grease for longer life in difficult applications.

Full-Complement Ball Bearings
The Kilian full-complement design allows the assembly of the maximum number of balls without a loading slot. This construction provides the greatest load capacity while minimizing cost. It is suitable for applications where noise and speed are not critical.

Roller BearingsRoller Bearings

Using rollers instead of balls provides additional load capacity and stability. A full complement of cylindrical rollers can be used for most applications.

Drawn Cup Needle Roller Bearings

Size Range
Inch: 1/8 in. - 5-1/2 in. bore
Metric: 3mm - 60mm bore

Drawncup

Drawn cup needle bearings are designed to support radial loads and reduce friction between rotating components. The low cross section of the drawn cup bearing provides maximum load-carrying capability with a minimum of space required. Drawn cup bearings are easily installed with a press fit in the housing. We offer a wide size range of standard inch and metric drawn cup bearings.

CS_Drawncup There are two basic designs: the full complement and the caged version. Both have a drawn outer shell which serves as a raceway for the rollers contained in the bearing. The full complement version has the maximum number of rollers mechanically retained by the drawn outer shell. This design combines high radial load-carrying capability with low cost. The standard caged version contains a one-piece steel cage to guide and retain the rollers. This design provides high speed and maximum lubricant retention capability.

Radial Needle Assemblies

Size Range
6mm - 150mm bore

Radialcage

Needle roller and cage assemblies consist of a complement of needle rollers held in place by a cage. With no inner or outer ring, the low cross section provides maximum load-carrying capability within the smallest envelope. The mating shaft and housing are normally used as inner and outer raceways.

CS_RadialcageThe unitized design makes for easy handling and installation. Controlled contour rollers with an optimum profile reduce end stresses and allow operation under moderate misalignment. A variety of cage designs, styles and materials, as well as multiple roller paths and segmented construction, meet broad application requirements.

Typical Applications

  • Automotive and truck transmissions (automatic and manual)
  • Agricultural and construction equipment
  • Two-cycle engines (marine outboards, lawn and garden equipment)
  •  Pumps and compressors

Additional Options

  • Special coatings and platings

Spherical Roller Bearings

Size Range
25mm - 1500 mm bore

Spherical Roller Bearings

Spherical roller bearings have spherical rollers that share a common configuration with their inner and outer rings. These matching spherical surfaces enable the bearings to compensate for modest misalignment between a rotating shaft and the bearing housing.

This design, which includes two rows of rolling elements, has high radial capacity and accommodates combinations of radial and axial loads. Different series are available for various application combinations of loads and speeds. These use different internal configurations and cages for specific operating conditions. Super Precision variations enhance performance for optimum process control.

Typical Applications

  • Pulp and paper mills
  • Construction and mining equipment
  • Metal millsCS_Spherical Roller Bearing

Expanded Options

  • Super Precision variations
  • Advanced metallurgy
  • Special coatings for corrosion resistance, etc.

Steering Intermediate Shaft Assemblies

Steering Intermediate Shaft AssembliesThe steering intermediate shaft is a significant vehicle safety item that connects the steering column to the steering gear box. The primary function is to transmit torque reliably through angles while dampening noise, vibration and harshness from the driver. Another key function is to enhance occupant safety through the use of energy management features. These help the vehicle conform to government and industry collision safety regulations.

Torrington intermediate shaft assemblies typically consist of two universal joints connected by a shaft or tube. Other components include isolators for noise, vibration and harshness, as well as sliding elements. Additional features such as decouplers and convoluted tubes may be added to absorb impact energy.

Torrington designs intermediate shafts to meet the performance requirements of passenger cars, light trucks and sport utility vehicles.

Typical Applications

Lubrication Change

Replacement of Shell Alvania grease

Shell Oil Company has ceased production of its existing Alvania #2, and Alvania #3 greases. These are considered to be general purpose greases and were supplied as a standard lubricant in many of the Fafnir ball and Torrington needle bearing product produced over the last 20 plus years. Shell has reformulated the Alvania greases to eliminate sodium nitrite, and is re-introducing the grease under the names Alvania RL2, and Alvania RL3.
Shell has developed nitrite free products to address industry concerns relating to the health and safety issues associated with sodium nitrite, and in response to European market mandates to remove sodium nitrite from products. The new Alvania RL greases offer physical properties and performance characteristics that meet or exceed the previous formula.

Our plants have a limited supply of the original Alvania grease, and as that supply is exhausted all bearing production that utilizes this grease will be converted to the new Alvania RL formulation.

Our part numbers and item descriptions have not changed, however our lube code designation will change to identify the new grease. Where it may be necessary to identify which version of the grease is in a particular bearing, please note the lube code number, which is clearly marked on the product label and check the attached interchange table.
